On the night of October 26, lightning struck the house of Amber Graner and her family and it became “a total loss”. Luckily no one was home at the time, and Amber’s parents were able to rescue the dog, but everything else is gone.

Rikki Kite at Linux Magazine is organizing a ChipIn for anyone interested in tossing in a few bucks to help Amber and her family to get back on their feet and help pay for necessities like food and clothes.

Amber is held in high regard within the Ubuntu community. She’s only been involved with the community for a little over a year now, but what she’s been able to accomplish in that time frame is quite impressive.

I attended her presentation at this year’s Ohio Linux Fest during the Friday’s Ubucon and her personality seemed impenetrable. It’s hard for me to imagine that something so tragic would happen to someone as upbeat and cheerful as she is.

Amazon.com began their One Laptop Per Child’s XO Give One Get One promotion. You can choose to either give one XO laptop to a child in a developing country, or give one to another child as well as get one for your own child.

The OLPC XO was designed for children in remote areas of the world. The screen had to be visible in bright sunlight, the case and the keyboard had to withstand the extremes of nature, it needed to be powered in areas where an electrical source is rare, and it needed to be cheap.

Prices for the G1G1 program are the same as they were last year. A $199 USD donation allows one to be given, while a $399 USD donation allows one to be gotten as well. Amazon was chosen as the sponsor for this year’s promotion in order to alleviate the distribution issues that occurred last year.
