A recent post at Slashdot links to an article at Phoronix where a reader stumbled across some Linux libraries that shipped with the Windows Left 4 Dead demo client. Valve has been interested in porting games to Linux this past year including a job opening for a Senior Software Engineer who would be given that as one of their tasks. The same article at Phoronix also confirms that “Valve Software has ported their Steam game client to Linux.”

The only reason I ever keep some installation of Windows around is to maintain access to games I’ve purchased through Steam. While I do enjoy open source games such as Sauerbraten and Urban Terror, I’m still attached to my Quake, Doom, FEAR, Bio-Shock, and Half-Life titles. If Valve could succeed in its intended goal, I could finally leave Windows forever.
