PPA For OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 For Hardy/Intrepid
UPDATE (2009 09 12): Apparently the administrators of the OpenOffice.org Scribblers PPA have recently dropped all of the OO.o 3.x packages for Hardy and Intrepid installs. They are now only offering packages for Jaunty. What follows is the original post, however, following the instructions for this intended purpose would be futile.
The OpenOffice.org Scribblers PPA had been supplying OO.o 3.0, but only for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex until now. Now us die-Hardy (pun intended) users can enjoy OO.o 3.0.1 using the update system instead of dealing with any confusing process, even the one I posted here not too long ago.
You can see the OO.o Scribblers PPA page at Launchpad for more information, but to make this quick and to the point, here’s what needs to be done. Hardy and Intrepid users can follow this same process with only one change noted below.
Add the PPA repository to your sources.list file. We’ll do this graphically. Go to System > Administration > Software Sources. Click on the Third-Party Software tab and click the Add… button.

Place the PPA’s repository address in the APT Line box, and click the Add Source button. Hardy users should use:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ppa/ubuntu hardy main
Intrepid users should use:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
You’ll see it listed at the bottom of the list. The picture below is mine. I have quite a few repos I follow, so your’s probably won’t look so crowded.

Next we need the PGP key to authenticate the packages for this PPA. Just recently, Launchpad has added PGP signing keys to all the PPAs in order to improve security. The OO.o Scribblers PPA key can be found at http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x60D11217247D1CFF
We’ll make a temporary text file containing the key. Open a text editor (Applications > Text Editor) and copy/paste the entire key into a new document. Save it to your home directory with a name you’ll remember. Consider it a temporary file that you can overwrite in the future for other keys. I’ve pasted their PGP key below.
-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK----- Version: SKS 1.0.10mI0ESXanRwEEAOTPu1sTcJChTjkA9LkIh6WqiBgPzxNY2p8w18Qt/cE3ev4VyjiIadZtr+fh C+kuRRQuRinLV+MzeD7Od3uqyR1plc90lqUeLeKJMgXfCoGMmKwng0qD2gpevIvEEpdlmsRo 1hutsyRxAL3o/NfFpovg6dWC27Y1Vwwma8UIL5wXABEBAAG0K0xhdW5jaHBhZCBQUEEgZm9y IE9wZW5PZmZpY2Uub3JnIFNjcmliYmxlcnOItgQTAQIAIAUCSXanRwIbAwYLCQgHAwIEFQII AwQWAgMBAh4BAheAAAoJEGDREhckfRz/4QoEAOJ429PsO5oi1xsnX/lraHACYpHNvk4KVghu cY2p6J8M0WTTlfls96jRYGlDBDuyZcfW0W+VJlaiu28u2Y9zEnXTWHMlIk6PiOmLPxXofgDf lKRqvBFYdRD8+33TBeD6u6qajNOLYTL08dnqCfVqmJTGZxqXTmYIOF1NdIs0KlF/ =1y5I -----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----

Going back to the Software Sources window, we’ll import that key. Click on the Authentication tab and click Import Key File… button. Highlight the file you just saved with the text editor and click OK. You should then see it at the bottom of your Trusted software providers list.

Additional Precautionary Step: Lastly, click on the Ubuntu Software tab and make sure the universe repository is enabled as the PPA packages will need to acquire a handful of hardy packages as well. Thanks to Tony Land for experiencing that aggravating problem.

Click on the Close button and you’ll get a window explaining that information about your software is out-of-date. Click on Reload and the package information will get downloaded. Now you should see the familiar update icon in your task bar. Clicking on it will bring up the Update Manager and it should show you a list of everything that needs to be updated including the new OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 packages. Click on Install Updates and enjoy OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 on your Hardy or Intrepid installation.

Fantastic! Thanks.

Perfect, very simple ! I assume that we will get future updates now that we have installed the repository , correct ?
Well done.

Easy and working!
Thank you for the tutorial.
Greetings from Germany.

This was so easy, I am impressed. Works perfectly. I hope they expand the use of PPA’s, I think it has alot of potential. Even the ability to have payment for commercial apps may entice more people to linux, (know it is not free) and atract more developers.

W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net intrepid Release: The following signatures couldn’t be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 60D11217247D1CFF
I get this error message when reloading the software sources… any ideas.

@Dougal
All packages in PPA repositories are now signed with OpenPGP keys. Each PPA has it’s own public key.
For some reason, you must not have imported the public key for the OO.o Scribblers PPA as described above. Alternately, you can issue the following at a command line to import their key directly from Ubuntu’s keyserver:
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com d2bb86e0ebd0f0a43d4db3a760d11217247d1cffMay 1st, 2009 at 6:40 am
Everything proceeded as indicated until I clicked on the update icon in the tool bar and ran the update. I got a message regarding a “partial update”. When I accepted this the update proceeded and removing some packages and installing others.
The problem is that I now have only Evolution Mail and Calendar available under Applications – Office and no access to Open Office.
I need help either to access Open Office 3 or to restore the original version.

Following my last comment:
I am using Ubuntu Hardy
When I run update manager it indicates that there is an update
Other Updates
openoffice.org office suite–libdba (size:548 KB)
This update is in light gray and is cannot be installed
Synaptic Package manager shows
Openoffice.org-base-core
Installed Version 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1
Latest Version 1:3.0.1-7ubuntu~hardy1
It does not appear possible to install the update.
Let me know if you need to have more information

Open a terminal window and at the command line issue
sudo apt-get install openoffice.orgOr set openoffice.org to install from Synaptic.
I’m guessing that the openoffice.org-base-core was responsible for removing the other 2.4.x files. Now that they’re gone, the openoffice.org metapackage should retrieve the remaining 3.0.x packages.
If all else fails, you can still get 2.4.x back from the Hardy repos. Disable the PPA repository from the Software Sources > Third-Party Software tab, then issue the following at the command line:
sudo apt-get purge openoffice.org* && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install openoffice.orgThat should first remove any remaining 3.0.x openoffice.org packages, then update your local apt cache, and finally install the 2.4.x openoffice.org packages from the Hardy repos.

Thanks for the help.
Just to complete the knowledge base:
I tried the first suggestion: sudo apt-get install openoffice.org
The result is as below:
/home/tonyland/Documents/orgterminal
tonyland@tonyland-dell-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install openoffice.org
[sudo] password for tonyland:
Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information… Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
openoffice.org: Depends: openoffice.org-base but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-calc but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-core (= 1:3.0.1-7ubuntu1~hardy1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-draw but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-impress but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-math but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-officebean but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-report-builder-bin but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-writer but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-writer2latex but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
tonyland@tonyland-dell-laptop:~$
Your second suggestion did reinstall OpenOffice 2 which I will continue to use.
I guess the moral is “If it aint broke don’t fix it!
Again many thanks

It took my a good three hours from installing a base hardy system in which to try and reproduce the problem that Tony Land is experiencing. I finally came across the “partial upgrade” problem and it deals with the PPA packages not being able to pull a handful of hardy packages from the universe repository. Open the Software Sources window and make sure that Community-maintained Open Source software (universe) is enabled from the Ubuntu Software tab.

NOTE: The ppa repository for OpenOffice.org does not have any help, so when you try to use help (e.g. press F1), you’ll get an error message.

Re: Barry Klein’s observation about “Help” not being available on ppa 3.1.0:
1) Is there any plan to add “Help” down the road?
2) I actually preferred 3.0 (I love help screens, especially when I’m trying to teach new users)… but there’s no way to revert to it. Are there any plans to add the 3.0 back onto the ppa repository?
May 29th, 2009 at 1:00 am
There was just an update today that seems to have fixed the availability of help. Before today, I would get the same issue with 3.1 on my Jaunty installations that both Barry Klein and David Cowell were describing in spite of having the help package installed.
The Update Manager had all of the installed OO.o 3.1 packages listed for update. After the update, the help was working again.
If you’re not sure if the help package(s) are installed, open the Synaptic Package Manager, click on the Origin button at the bottom left, you’ll see a list above that of your active repositories. There should be an entry for ppa.launchpad.net/main that when highlighted will show all of the available packages from that repository in the main window. If you scroll down, you’ll see all of the openoffice.org-help- packages for 3.1.x. Find the package for your language and mark it for installation if it isn’t.

Looks like the Hardy packages have been removed…? That repo now contains packages for jaunty only…
September 12th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
Well… that certainly makes this post null and void, now.
They haven’t only removed Hardy but also the Intrepid packages as well. The PPA is currently for only Jaunty to install OpenOffice.org 3.1.1.
