Just use dpkg to install that one single package.
sudo dpkg -i /pathtofolder/openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb
Change /pathtofolder/ to where ever yours is located. If you’re still getting an error, then you still have the Ubuntu package that conflicts with this OO.o package. See step 3a, above.

Great info! One question: I received an error message regarding openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb. I see where F. Wright reinstalled that to get it to work. I’m new to Ubuntu – how do I reinstall that specific package?

Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was trying to install OO03 during the last two weeks!!!!!! You can figure out my happiness!!!!

I just installed Kubuntu 8.10 with OpenOffice 2.4 and tried all instructions published. Only those ones work fine!!!!

Thanks, this worked great. I had to reinstall openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb after everything to make the menu items appear.

When I said "replace /usr/lib/openoffice/program in the instructions with /opt/openoffice.org3/program" I was referring to the instructions for the dark theme workaround, which are found HERE. Since OO.o 3.0.0 from these instructions installs to a different location than your original 2.4.1, you would need to change the instructions in the dark theme workaround accordingly. I should probably make that statement a bit more clear.
