There is just under a week of support left for the Desktop edition of Ubuntu’s first LTS release, 6.06 Dapper Drake. Steve Langasek had this to say in his email:

“Ubuntu announced the release of 6.06 over three years ago, on June 1, 2006. At that time, Ubuntu committed to its first long-term support (LTS) cycle, with security and critical fixes for three years on the desktop and five years on the server. The desktop support period is now at its end, and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Desktop will reach end of life on Tuesday, July 14, 2009. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Desktop.”

You can read the rest of his email archived HERE. He tried to link to the instructions for upgrading from 6.06 to 8.04 Hardy Heron, the most recent LTS which will receive desktop updates for another two years, but accidentally included an extra period.

Users with 6.06 Server installations will continue to receive updates for an additional two years. A list of the supported packages can be found HERE for reference.
